Medical Tourism

It is understood that medical tourism is the practice of a patient who travel to another country for diagnostic, non-surgical or complex medical treatments. Two economic sectors represent the pillars of: One is tourism which involves air and local transport, hotel accommodations, food, shopping and sightseeing. Second is Health which includes hospitals, pharmaceutical, ambulatory and nursing care.

Domestic Medical Tourism

Domestic medical tourism has been in Sudan for at least the past century when patients traveled from the very remote areas to Khartoum. Domestic tourists are interested in medical treatment or diagnostic tests, such as orthopedic and cardiac care, spinal surgery, complex surgeries, radiotherapy, neurosurgery, reproductive or cancer treatment, among others, to improve their health and wellbeing.

Inequities to access and shortages of medical facilities, specialized doctors and surgeons in remote and regional parts of Sudan have encouraged low- and middle-income patients to travel to Khartoum for care.

The key driving factors for domestic medical tourism in Sudan are:‍

lack of medical facilities, diagnostic centers and specialty surgeons

treatment and surgery is unavailable in the very remote and regional areas

long waiting periods in public hospitals

advanced medical facilities and the quality of medical care within Sudan’s cities except for Khartoum.

shorter distances compared to travel abroad, such as Egypt, Jordan, Turkey or India

using the same language, food and cultural barriers

support provided by relatives or friends in Khartoum

no immigration procedure requirements (i.e. passport or medical visa)

HMTD care network covers countries like Egypt and India which are providing lower costs. Jordan, Turkey, Thailand, and the Philippines offer more competitive costs. All HMTD’s network of hospitals and clinics are characterized by their little or no waiting periods, world-class quality healthcare, accredited medical facilities and expertise, state-of-the-art medical technology, attractive nurse-to-patient ratios, and a chance to take a mini-vacation at an attractive destination.
